Gothenburg (Göteborg in Swedish) is the second biggest city in Sweden and it is located on the west coast. The metropolitan area is home to almost a million people, and it is growing.
One of the biggest infrastructure projects in Swedish history, is taking place in Gothenburg and along the westcoast of Sweden right now: The West Swedish Agreement. The agreement includes huge improvements to public transport systems: A dual-track railway tunnel under the centre of Gothenburg, a new bridge over the river and another new car tunnel under it, will simplify all types of commuting within the city and region.
One of the city areas that is currently being developed in Gothenburg is Masthuggskajen. New homes, restaurants, preschools, workplaces and hotels will be built here in the next couple of years. The connections to Majorna, Linné and Gothenburg’s inner city will be improved and a promenade along the river will be built. Masthuggskajen will go from being a district with large parking areas and heavily trafficked streets, to instead becoming a place where people can meet and enjoy themselves. On Masthamnsgatan and in the district’s new parks, spaces will be designated for socializing and physical activity, especially for children and young people. Another focus for the area is sustainability. It will therefore invest in attractive pedestrian and bicycle lanes, public transportations, bicycle parking spots and car and bicycle pools.
